What Is The Average Number Of Care Homes People Visit Before Choosing One?

According to our research, 60% of people looking for care homes are prepared to visit 3-5 care homes before making a decision.

How many homes are you prepared to visit? % of people surveyed
1-2 homes 28%
3-5 homes 60%
6+ homes 12%

In our research, we discovered that 60% of individuals seeking a care home are willing to visit 3-5 different homes before selecting one that meets their requirements. By visiting multiple care homes, they can compare and contrast facilities, assess the quality of care, and evaluate the atmosphere and services provided.

Alternatively, 28% of people stated that they would only consider visiting 1-2 care homes, possibly because they have received a personal recommendation or already have knowledge of a suitable care home. They may also be constrained by a lack of time or insufficient options in their preferred location.

Only 12% of the respondents indicated that they would visit 6 or more care homes before making a decision. This is likely because they are not in immediate need of care, giving them ample time to explore and compare care home options, or they are searching for care homes in multiple locations.

How can you make your care home stand out?

Now that we have established that the average person looking for a care home is likely to visit between 3-5 care homes, it is important to understand how you can make your care homes stand out from the rest.

Person-centred Care

By prioritising residents' individual needs, preferences, and desires, and providing tailored and compassionate care, create an environment where residents feel valued and respected, evident during visits.

Well-trained and compassionate staff

Invest in comprehensive training programs to equip staff with the necessary skills and knowledge for excellent care. Foster a compassionate and empathetic approach in their interactions with residents and families. Dedicated staff can greatly enhance the overall experience in your care home.

Engaging Activities and Socialisation

Develop a diverse range of activities that cater to different interests and abilities, such as arts and crafts, exercise classes, music therapy, and outings. Encourage socialisation among residents, fostering a sense of community and companionship within the care home.

Comfortable and homely environment

Create a warm and inviting atmosphere within your care home. Pay attention to the interior design, ensuring it is aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and reminiscent of a home-like setting. Additionally, provide ample spaces for relaxation, socialisation, and communal activities.

Effective communication with families

Establish open and transparent communication with residents' families, providing regular updates on well-being and involving them in care planning and decisions. Seek feedback, address concerns promptly, and build trust to enhance your care home's reputation.

Creating a unique and outstanding care home requires a genuine dedication to the well-being of residents, continuous improvement, and a commitment to providing personalised care. By focusing on these key areas, you can differentiate your care home and build a reputation for excellence in the industry.
